Sanitary and Environmental Engineering
The urban water management is an extremely complex field of work, which integrates practical experience and scientific findings from the fields of engineering, biology, hydrology and computer science. The urban water management includes the areas of water treatment, water supply, sewerage, waste water treatment and in some cases the water quality. In many cases, there is overlap and intersection between individual task fields. Hydrological considerations play an important role in water supply, sewerage and purification, as well as water quality. Organic sales processes are based on the purification processes both in the water and in the technological process of wastewater treatment.
Marc Wichern (Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil.) is Professor of the Department of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering since 2009. He worked for several years in the field of mathematical modeling of biochemical processes of various wastewater treatment systems. In recent years, he worked in addition to the development and optimization of processes for the elimination of micro-pollutants in municipal wastewater treatment plants.
Manfred Lübken (Dr.-Ing.) has been working for several years in the area of anaerobic digestion, with the aim to make use of the anaerobic processes for an energy-efficient material conversion of different substrates. One focus is the analysis and mathematical description of anaerobic biochemical conversion processes of wastewater and organic biomass.
Pascal Kosse (M. Sc.) is working as a graduate student at the department since October 2013. Focuses of his studies are water chemistry, water analysis and microbiology. His master thesis was concerned with wastewater treatment using algae-activated sludge biocenosis. Most recently, he was in charge at the Department of the scientific work of the subproject 6 in the joint project KuLaRuhr - optimizing regional energy and material flows by means of a sustainable concept for the use of wastewater and agricultural biomass.
Max Stricker (M. Sc.) is a research associate and PhD student at the chair of Urban Water Management and Environmental Engineering since March 2019. His studies focused on process engineering and mathematical modelling. In his master thesis he investigated the hydraulic mixing in an anerobic digester using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Prior to his occupation as a research associate, he worked as a research assistant in projects on the design of wastewater treatment plants under extreme climatic conditions (EXPOVAL) and on the development of microbial fuel cells (MBZ).
Hygiene, Social and Environmental Medicine
The department of Hygiene, Social and Environmental Medicine of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) works on research and routine of water hygiene. In more detail, research focuses on appearance and elimination of enteric viruses, phages and bacteria within different aquatic environments. Another research aspect is the implementation of quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA).
Prof. Dr. med. Michael Wilhelm is head of the department for hygiene, social- and environmental medicine at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB). His research interests are in the area of water- and hospital hygiene, as well as in human biomonitoring. Within the project “Viruses in biofilms”, Prof. Wilhelm is second supervisor of Martin Mackowiak.
Mats Leifels machte seinen B. Sc. am Lehrstuhl der Biologie der Mikroorganismen der Biologischen Fakultät und seinen M. Sc. in der Abteilung für Hygiene, Sozial- und Umweltmedizin der medizinischen Fakultät der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Anschließend war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der Abteilung und arbeitete in diversen Projekten des LANUV und BMBF mit. Im Rahmen von FUTURE WATER ist er mit der Anwendung verschiedener Biosensoren zur Bestimmung der Infektiosität humanpathogener Viren in Ab- und Oberflächenwasser beschäftigt.
